Follow our Hearts, and Find Love in our Time by the-Orator Follow our Hearts, and Find Love in our Time by the-Orator
I watched Brave for the second time recently and, while I was disappointed the first time I saw it in theaters, I liked it much better this time around and the story has really begun to grow on me and I'm starting fall in love with it.

You might notice me trying out new style and techniques based around some of my favorite artists for a while because I'm working on stretching the creative muscles and stepping out of my comfort zone. The design style in the piece was inspired by the amazing Shoomlah's Toile designs: [link]
I was going to use a different secondary color, but gold seemed to be the only one that universally combined well with all the other colors :/ and I also decided to keep Merida's hair red since its such a symbolic part of not only her character but the movie

Any one of those would've made a great movie

I'm dissapointed by the film because of how incredibly rich celtic mythology is; and yet...bears: again. When it didn't work all that well when it was original. I was hoping for something more mystical, more political and action packed: that's what the trailers promised. The fact that Merida fights for her own hand was a stroke of classic mythology, going back to the Grecian story of the princess and the golden apples. Plus, you had three boys damned, for the sake of their clans, to fight for the right to protect, provide, comfort and even die for a total stranger. A stranger that doesn't even want them around, fighting for HER freedom in the face of all these political factions--nobody could fault her for wanting a choice, but...what about the boys? Their choices are forfeit. They're doing what they're doing because it's their duty. I mean...obviously the answer is love, but...duty should have its due context. Maybe all the kids reject the contest and they have to stop a civil war--maybe some of them want to continue the contest anyway! Maybe it's mutually assured misery, because they don't want to be the first one who quits and leaves their family in the breeze. Maybe one of the kids has a clan trying to cout and kill the king. Maybe there's a fairy suitor trying to steal Merida away, a trope common in Irish-Scotts legends: all because the sidhe are a dying breed, they need humans to prolong their race. That would have incorporated magic perfectly. It could have been SO politically literate; but...that whole element of the story is shoved unceremoniously into the background. Wars have been fought over things like that, but it's dismissed out of hand. That's frustrating to watch.

If I had ran that film I would have written Merida like Princess Nausica from 'Valley of the Wind', someone who has to juggle multiple points of view for the sake of diplomacy while desperately, recklessly at times, striving for her own solution to the fighting. She could have tried to empathize with the boys, and said 'I'm not just doing this for me.' She could have been conflicted whether or not she was being self-centered or genuinely altruistic. Maybe a bit of both. Maybe sometimes prioritizing what YOU want enables others to do the same.

I like your versions of Merida with the suitors, because...I love all your male-female interactions. They're very organic and warm; and they're not precious or calculated or safe. They're just good writing, good animation. There's nothing mean-spirited or domineering about them; and, sadly, that's becoming rare, speaking as a man. It's just taxing, watching most television nowadays as a guy: it just feels like everyone's taking a shot at you. Your work has a spectacular sense of comedic equity, the men and women are both silly and stupid; because, duh, we're all silly and stupid at some point at something. It's just refreshing to see someone more...frothy, more bubbly when it comes to character writing.

 You're doing amazing work!

Interesting story, in the original version of the film, before being changed to what it is now, she was gonna chose Young MacGuffin. In the newer revamped version of the story, in the end of the film there was a cut scene where she was going to show interest in him, but due to his Doric dialect, she would express disappointment in not being able to understand him.

So that very bottom image came VERY close to being canon.

She was really gonna choose MacGuffin? 0.0
Ixbran Featured By Owner May 18, 2013
yup, in the original plot of the film, that is untill they decided she was going to chose to remain single, and even then, they still wanted the couple to be hinted at in a scene that was sadly cut.

Personally I think Young MacGuffin and Merida would have made a cute couple.
DelDiz Featured By Owner May 18, 2013
Me too. I think it would have been really cool if it turned out she was the only one who COULD understand what he was saying

Yeah I was hoping for some of this in the movie. It could have been that they helped her rescue her mom in the end along with her brothers.

I was disappointed that Merida didn't spend any time with the suitors individually in the movie. This is awesome!

It's an amazing piece. I love the style and color scheme that corresponds with all of the of the houses proper colors. I also enjoy the fact that this acts as a nice piece of head cannon for the story following up on the young nobles want to get to know each other before and try courting instead of just a straight up marriage.
