Pitch Black by the-Orator Pitch Black by the-Orator
So I saw Rise of the Guardians
Guess who my favorite character is~ (trick question, the answer is ALL of them)
but I drew Pitch because villains are always the best

Costume design is mostly based off of rufftoon's ( [link] ) wonderful interpretation: [link] . I also threw in a hint of Pitch's costumed design from the books: [link] . And some embroidery because it never hurt. (cause lets face it, Pitch's outfit in the movie is pretty plain)

I think this would be a perfect costume change for Pitch if he were to become a Guardian.

Black. Its the least favorite color in the entire color scheme. Its considered depressing, unlucky and most commonly evil. Its a cruel stereotype but its true. Its almost understandable why many people don't like black so much. With its lack of brightness like the many other colors and being so much more dreary than its counterpart pure color of white and considerably plain compared to the flashy color of silver, its doesn't bring much imagination to one's mind. No one knew this better than Pitch Black, the King of Nightmares. For so long all he ever knew was dark and that it represented fear. And for an equally long time many humans resented him for the fear and nightmares he made. This resentment wasn't lost on the Guardians, whom he lost to recently. Pitch was content to drown in the darkness with his Night Mares and Fearlings. Let the bitterness of loss and the sadness of being unwanted grip his heart and soul. He's done this for the past several centuries.

But then he felt something. A familiar chill that was much stronger and welcoming than the harsh draft of his domain. Pitch turned and saw none other than Jack Frost, who looked different from when he last saw him. His appearance wasn't what was different exactly. It was his aura, the look in his eyes and just the general way he presented himself. He didn't come off as the cocky, fast talking rebel. Sure the dark being could still sense the playful mischievousness and great level of confidence but now it was more tamed with humility and experience. Once he got over his mental assessment Pitch asked why the snow nymph was here, a deep scowl on his ashen grey face. Jack said that he brought along someone who wanted to see him. Actually, the young Guardian corrected, someone who has been looking for him for as long as Pitch has been around. This greatly confused Pitch and his scowl turned into a hybrid expression of curiosity and thoughtfulness. Who would be looking for him for as long as the Dark Ages and wanting to see him? His line of work has made him no friends to warrant such a pursuit. At least not one with friendly intentions. Pitch then asked who this person was that wanted to see him. Jack turned to the dark corner of shadows and told someone, possibly the person who wanted to see him, that they could step out.

The King of Nightmares watched with a held breath as he heard the soft taps of footsteps. The slight clicking made him think of heels and could mean that it was a woman. As the person walked out of the shadows Pitch was pleasantly assaulted by the refreshing scent of fresh grass, flowers and wheat. When he wondered why he saw that it was actually slowly growing on the floor of his domain. Whoever this person was it seemed like nature grew with every step they took. And Pitch knew only one person who had such great power over the Earth to be able to do that and sure enough she appeared. Mother Nature herself, in all of her regal glory with her green and gold trimmed dress. Pitch knew of the woman but never met her in person. And looking at her now he noticed something odd about her. Her hair and was so much like his own. Too much like his own. Mother Nature smiled at Pitch in a sentimental way he couldn't exactly place. She then asked him if he knew her. Pitch shrugged and said that he knew of her, but didn't know her personally. Mother Nature gave an understanding nod, saying that she expected as much. Then she pulled something from around her neck that the King of Nightmares noted as a golden locket. The nature nymph walked towards Pitch, more grass and flowers growing as she did so, and held the pendant out to him. She told him to take it, and hold onto it tightly and think deeply. Pitch again found himself confused and looked to Jack to see if he knew what this was about. The snow nymph just smiled back and gestured for Pitch to take the locket.

Though hesitant Pitch reached his hand out and took the gold piece of jewelry. As Mother Nature asked he held onto it tightly and thought deeply. He didn't know what the point of this was at first. But as a flood images hit his mind he steadily began to understand. The images playing before his eyes were memories. And, as he soon realized, HIS memories. They were memories of a life he didn't know that he had. He wasn't always Pitch Black after all but in fact was Kozmotis Pitchiner, the general who kept guard of a small village and kept the Night Mares and Fearlings from getting away. And he had a daughter given to him by a wife who sadly died shortly after giving birth. The daughter's name was Emily, Emily Jane Pitchiner, and she loved Kozmotis with all of her heart as did Kozmotis to Emily. They would go on horseback rides on Kozmotis' loyal war horse mare Onyx late at night when the fireflies were out and would go on nature walks in the day because Emily adores flowers and plants. Then three particular memories stood out to Pitch. The first was him giving his daughter a golden locket with a picture of them together, the same locket he was holding now. The second was Pitch rushing to the Night Mare and Fearling dungeon on Onyx's back to stop the escaping dark creatures but both were soon overpowered and fell to the black magic. Then from the ashes stood Pitch Black and his equestrian like Night Mare. But the third memory stood out most of all. Emily was running from an escaped Fearling, panting and crying and calling for her father. She raced to the Weeping Widow tree where Pitch had buried his late wife, as that was her favorite tree, and braced herself against it as if it would protect her. Then when the Fearling charged at her something extraordinary happened. Rather than fall into a dark oblivion or die Emily was consumed by a green mist that seemed to come from the Weeping Willow and the Fearling's body soon evaporated into a black mist and surrounded Emily, going into her skin. After a minute another new person stood in the place of a Pitchiner. No longer stood Emily Jane Pitchiner but now stood Mother Nature. And that's when the memories stopped, then Pitch's now wide gold eyes looked upon the gentle green eyes of Mother Nature. No, it was Emily...his daughter.

From there, things began to change for the better with Pitch. He found new meaning with the color black, or rather he rediscovered the true meaning of darkness that he lost with his mortal memories. Black isn't depressing, unlucky and its certainly not evil. It is a misunderstood color that can be easily twisted if misfortune falls onto it. But if you look at it right you'll see what black really means. It means seriousness, power and authority. And the fear that is associated with it isn't always a bad thing. Fear challenges us, makes us push beyond our limits to become courageous and stand up in the face of adversity. Thus the darkness and nightmares that Pitch creates truly does serve a purpose. And slowly but surely the resentment that kept people from believing in him changed into understanding. Soon the Little Lights could see him and when they did they didn't draw back in terror. They approached him as they do with the other Guardians with a smile and admiring eyes.

And when his first believer, a little girl that looked so much like his late wife, gave him that smile and looked at him with bright eyes filled with admiration Pitch Black earned a second name. He was now known as Pitch Black, the Guardian of Strength. Manny shined brightly that night when Pitch earned that second name. Now the Man on the Moon had ALL of his Guardians serving the Little Lights of the world.

The End~

Gorgeous! Truthfully, seeing his wardrobe from the books, both as the nightmare king AND as Kozmotis, i was a bit disappointed in his movie outfit. its still cool how its made of living shadows and whatnot, but it needed a little something, which you nicely added!

Poor Pitch, following his role or not, there could be no happy ending for him. I was disappointed nobody would acknowledge how tragic was his fate.
